Defender George joins Brighton from Man Utd

Manchester United defender Gabby George has completed a move to Brighton before the start of the Women's Super League season.

BBC Sport reported this week that Brighton would pay an undisclosed fee, believed to be six figures, for the 29-year-old.

The versatile defender, who joined United in 2023, had a year remaining on her contract after United activated an option clause in January.

It is understood that George was seeking regular game time and she becomes a valuable addition to Brighton's ambitious squad.

"We are delighted to welcome Gabby to the club," said manager Dario Vidosic.

"Her versatility in defence gives us fantastic options and her technical quality on the ball will help elevate how we want to play.

"She understands what it takes to perform at the highest level in this league week-in, week-out, and her leadership both on and off the pitch will strengthen our group tremendously.

"We have big ambitions for the season ahead and adding a player of Gabby's calibre and character is a massive step forward for us."

During her three-year United stay, George made more than 50 appearances and was part of the squad that won the Women's FA Cup in 2024.

George graduated from Everton's academy and played more than 100 games for them before her move to United.

She has three caps for England and brings experience to a Brighton squad who are strengthening yet again this summer.

Dario Vidosic's side have already added Switzerland captain Lia Walti and midfielder Emilie Joramo from Hammarby, among others.

Brighton finished seventh in the WSL last season and open this year's campaign at home to Arsenal on Sunday, 6 September (12:00 BST).

United confirmed on Monday that manager Marc Skinner had left his role by mutual consent and they are currently looking at candidates to replace him.
