A gunman opened fire Saturday afternoon at a recently opened In-N-Out Burger in Twin Falls, Idaho, sending a shopping center into chaos as people fled from stores and restaurants. At least three people were killed and five injured, according to the authorities.

The Twin Falls Police Department said it received a call for an active shooter inside the restaurant around 2:30 p.m. The man suspected of the shooting is dead, the authorities said. As of Sunday morning, it remained unclear if the assailant was among the three fatalities or in addition to them.

Josh Palmer, a city spokesman, said the number of victims could increase.

The F.B.I. has set up a digital tip line for the public to submit images and videos related to the shooting.

What happened?

Local and state law enforcement agencies responded to calls of shots fired at In-N-Out Burger around 2:30 p.m. Officers arrived at what the Twin Falls police chief, Matthew Hicks, characterized as “the most chaotic scene that many of them will ever have in their careers.”

The shooting occurred in one of the busiest areas in southern Idaho, Chief Hicks said, in a commercial district with stores such as Petco and Best Buy and restaurant chains like IHOP and Taco Bell.

The authorities are still piecing together the events that led up to the shooting by interviewing hundreds of people who were in the general vicinity.
